In a ceremony held last Thursday in Miami, the winners of the WTA Tour Awards were revealed and once again world number one Serena Williams clinched the WTA Player of the Year honors for the second time. She first won this accolade in 2002.
The defending Sony Ericsson Open champion was unable to attend the event but left a message of thanks.
“Winning the Player of the Year award for the second time in my career is a great personal achievement,” Williams said in a statement.
The American was a clear-cut winner of the category having won the U.S. Open last year, finished runner up in Wimbledon singles. She also clinched the doubles gold medal with sister Venus in Olympics plus doubles trophy in Wimbledon.
