Star-studed women’s field in Madrid

Eight of the world’s top ten WTA singles players are taking part in this week’s Mutua Madrileña Madrid Open, a $4.5 million Premier claycourt event that made a grand debut in the women’s tour calendar this year. This tournament serves as a major tune-up for the Roland Garros which takes place later this month.

Co-world number ones Liezel Huber and Cara Black heads the ever competitive field in the doubles draw.

Here’s the list of top eight seeds:

[1] Dinara Safina

[2] Serena Williams

[3] Elena Dementieva

[4] Jelena Jankovic

[5] Venus Williams

[6] Svetlana Kuznetsova

[7] Victoria Azarenka

[8] Nadia Petrova

Should the seedings hold, the world could see a final showdown between Dinara Safina and Svetlana Kuznetsova for the third straight week. Kuznetsova won the Porsche tournament two weeks ago while Safina avenged the defeat by winning the Italian Open on Sunday. However, these two Russians will face stiff competition from the Williams sisters who are always a force to reckon with.
