Venetian Macau Showdown: Sampras-Agassi rivalry revival

Tennis greats Andre Agassi and Pete Sampras will face off for the first time since their last epic match at the US Open final in 2002, which the latter won.

The formidable duo will be back on the tennis arena later this year for an exhibition match that will be watched by more than 15,000 spectators at the Venetian Macau, a luxury hotel and casino located in the Asia’s gambling capital.

Dubbed as the “Venetian Macau Showdown,” the multiple Grand Slam winners will square off and revive the rivalry that transcended the sport. This event will take place on October 25 this year.

Both players are looking forward to battle it out on the tennis court.

“My motivation to play Andre in Macau will be playing my rival and the great energy that Macau has, so I am very excited to play him in October,” Sampras said.

Agassi said that he grabbed this rare opportunity because he had seen tennis greats such as Bjorn Borg, John McEnroe, Roger Federer and Pete Sampras participating in this event.

“I was excited to join such an illustrious roster of top tennis names,” he said.

This will be the third staging of the Venetian Macau Showdown. In 2007, Sampras defeated Federer after suffering two losses earlier in the year Seoul and Kuala Lumpur. Last year, four players were featured in the event namely James Blake, Borg, McEnroe and Federer. There were two singles matches and one doubles rubber. Both Federer and Borg won their singles matches while Blake and McEnroe won the doubles match against Federer and Borg.
