Wimbledon 2009: Tough draw for Rafael Nadal

Defending men’s singles champion Rafael Nadal got a tough draw at the All England Club. The draw for this year’s grasscourt Slam was released on Friday.

The world number one, who will decide later today if he’ll defend the title, could set up a second round faceoff against former Wimby champ Lleyton Hewitt of Australia. The latter defeated the Spaniard yesterday at an exhibition match on grass. Possible semifinal opponent for the top seed is British player Andy Murray.

Meanwhile, five-time Wimbledon winner Roger Federer will be gunning for his 15th Slam title. If he wants to achieve this feat, he’ll need to get past the likes of 4th seed Novak Djokovic of Serbia which he could face in the semifinals and others. The Swiss star is brimming in confidence coming into the grasscourt tournament due after winning back-to-back claycourt titles in Madrid and Roland Garros.
In the women’s side, third seed and defending champion Venus Williams of the United States is placed in the same draw as topranked Dinara Safina. Her younger sister, Serena Williams is at the other side of the draw. This could set up a potential repeat of last year’s singles final for the sisters. The siblings are expected to also defend the women’s doubles title.
