2009 US Open: Prize money increase revealed

The prize money for the 2009 US Open increased by $1 million, bringing the total to a record $21.6 million. Plus, the top three winners of the Olympus US Open Series could earn extra cash prize money if they make it in the final stages of the hardcourt Slam tournament.

The 2009 US Open men’s and women’s singles champions will get $1.6 million each. An additional $1 million will be given if they also topped the US Open Series. The singles champs will also get a new 2010 Lexus IS Convertible each.

Record payouts in tennis took place at this Slam event. In 2005, former world number one Kim Clijsters took home $2.2 million after winning the US Open and the US Open Series. On the men’s side, world number one Roger Federer achieved the feat in 2007 earning him a total of $2.4 million. These figures are the biggest payouts in tennis history.

The 2009 US Open will take place from August 31 to September 13 in New York.
