Jelena Dokic diagnosed with mononucleosis

Australian world no. 76 Jelena Dokic has been diagnosed with mononucleosis. This was announced by Tennis Australia on Friday.

This development was found out from the blood tests provided by the tennis star after her first round loss at the recently concluded Wimbledon tournament. Dokic lost to German qualifier Tatjana Malek.

Doctors have advised Dokic to take a rest from the women’s tour for at least two weeks.

Despite this news, the former world no. 4 said that she’s “relieved to finally know what was wrong” with her health.

“It has been so frustrating since the French Open. My natural work ethic is to get on court and train hard with intensity. I just haven’t been able to do that, and until now, I didn’t know why,” she said.

Dokic expressed her optimism that she’ll be fit enough to participate during the hardcourt tournaments leading to the US Open, which begins on August 31.
