Rogers Cup 2009: Andy Murray beats Del Potro to win 4th Masters title

The ten-match win streak of Argentine Juan Martin del Potro ended on Sunday at the finals of the Rogers Cup where he was beaten by new world number two Andy Murray 6-7, 7-6, 6-1. This served as Murray’s fourth career ATP Masters title.

For his victory, Murray received $443,500 and also moved up to third in the US Open Series Bonus Challenge rankings. Del Potro remains at the top but is only ahead by a few points.

In the match, Del Potro looked like he’s going to win his second straight hardcourt tournament, clinching the first set in a tiebreaker. However, Murray managed to reverse the fate in the second set tiebreaker to bring the match to a third set thriller.

By then, his Argentine opponent could no longer keep up with the momentum and let the match slip away and handed over the win to the Briton.

“He was just making it really tough because of the way that he was playing and serving, and he was always giving himself a chance. I had to keep fighting and believing in myself, and that was enough in the end,” Murray said after the match.

Both players are now looking forward to this week’s Cincinnati Masters. Del Potro may have a chance to avenge his defeat since they’re on the same quarter.
