US Open 2009: Kim Clijsters advances to third round

The return of Belgian Kim Clijsters in the WTA Tour is still making headlines with the former world number one advancing to the third round of this year’s US Open by beating 14th seed Marion Bartoli of France 5-7, 6-1, 6-2. Clijsters also defeated Bartoli in Cincinnati three weeks ago.

After a scrappy first set, Clijsters adjusted her game to eventually outplay her French opponent, who had to ask for a medical timeout in the second set.

The 2005 US Open champion will face compatriot Kirsten Flipkens in the third round. Flipkens beat Spain’s Anabel Medina Garrigues 6-1, 6-3.
