US Open 2009: Nadal survives abdominal problem, compatriot’s challenge

Former world number one Rafael Nadal struggled in his third round match at the US Open on Sunday, after the Spaniard suffered an abdominal problem during the third set. Thinking that he might as well get his own treatment, Nadal’s opponent, compatriot Nicolas Almagro called for his trainers at the same time. In the end, it was Nadal who prevailed 7-5, 6-4, 6-4.

During the post-match conference, Nadal avoided answering queries about the injuries.

“I came here and I know everybody wants to talk about the injury. I really don’t want to talk about that,” Nadal was quoted as saying.
The six-time Grand Slam champion will have a chance to complete a career Grand Slam if he wins this year’s U.S. Open. Current number one Roger Federer achieved this feat earlier this year when he won the French Open, the title that eluded the Swiss player several times in the past.

Nadal skipped Wimbledon this year due to tendinitis on both knees. He returned to competitions last month and showed promising results on the hardcourts. He was a semifinalist last year. His fourth round opponent will be Frenchman Gael Monfils.
