Hopman Cup: Spain wins third title

Spain won the Hopman Cup title for the third time after Maria Jose Martinez Sanches and Tommy Robredo joined forces to defeat Andy Murray and Laura Robson of Great Britain 76 75 in tie-breaking mixed doubles on Saturday.

Britain had an early lead after Robson won the first singles match against Martinez Sanches. However, Robredo evened things out by beating Murray 16 64 63. The mixed doubles match served as a tiebreaker.

ā€œIā€™m so happy because Andy is one of the great players in the world right now and beating him at the beginning of the year is going to give me a lot of confidence,ā€ Robredo said after the match.

ā€œI was just watching the diamond ball and I was pushing hard because I really would love to have one more,” he added.

Robredo was also part of the Spanish team when it last won the title in 2002. His partner then was Arantxa Sanchez Vicario.

Britain made it to the Hopman Cup final for the first time.
