Sydney International: Justine Henin backs out of tourney with injured leg

Returning former world number one Justine Henin injured her left leg in the final of the Brisbane International this weekend, prompting her to skip next week’s Sydney International to fully rest and prepare for the Australian Open.

Henin lost an epic final match against compatriot Kim Clijsters in Brisbane. However, she stated that the leg problem was not the main problem why she lost.

“It was a bit sore in the last few days and really got worse today in the third set. I hope it’s not that serious and that I’m going to be able to recover soon, but it would be just a great, great mistake to go and play in Sydney,” she said.

“It’s no excuse, it’s not the reason why I lost,” she added.

At this point, the seven-time Grand Slam winner said that she’s focusing on her return to the Grand Slam tennis scene.

“I just think it could get worse if I play in the next few days. It’s something I cannot do because there’s a goal for me in 10 days and I have to be ready,” she said.
