Former world number five Vera Zvonareva saw her ranking plummet from the latter part of 2009 after an injury-marred season. However, she managed to keep herself on track earlier this year by winning a title in Thailand and a runner-up finish in Charleston. At the 2010 Wimbledon Championships, the Russian was seeded 21st and clearly not a favorite to win the title. However, the field is now down to four and Zvonareva is still in the race. She will now face unseeded Bulgarian Tsvetana Pironkova for a place in the final.
They only met once in the past, at a tournament in Moscow where Pironkova had the upper hand. This may only be an ominous sign for the Russian. And of course, Pironkova was also the one who defeated five-time Wimbledon champion Venus Williams in the quarterfinals.
