Monte Carlo Masters 2011: Melzer upsets Roger Federer to reach semifinals

World number three Roger Federer will have to wait for another year to have a chance to win the Monte Carlo Masters title for the first time in his career. The Swiss star was beaten in the quarterfinals today by Austria’s Jurgen Melzer 4-6, 4-6. This served as Melzer’s first win against Federer in their four meetings.

Federer, a three-time Monte Carlo Masters finalist, has beaten the Austrian in their first three encounters – all in 2010 but all of these matches were played on claycourts.

Melzer will next play David Ferrer of Spain in the semifinals scheduled on Saturday, April 16.
