Belarussian Victoria Azarenka overcame a second-set hiccup to beat former world number one Maria Sharapova and won her second career Sony Ericsson Open title. The score: 6-1, 6-4. Azarenka had an amazing week, having beaten world number two Kim Clijsters, number three Vera Zvonareva and Sharapova.
The win solidified Azarenka’s place in the world’s top ten. She won the title two years ago.
Despite her loss, Sharapova is projected to enter the world’s top ten once the rankings are released next week.
