Novak Djokovic overcomes tough Murray semifinal challenge, reaches Rome Masters 2011 Final

World number two Novak Djokovic progressed to the final of Rome Masters 2011 after narrowly escaping the tough challenge from Britain’s Andy Murray in the semifinals. The Serbian star won 6-1, 3-6, 7-6.

Djokovic seemed headed to a straight set victory after winning the first set 6-1. However, Murray regrouped and took the second set 6-3. The deciding set was an interesting affair wherein spectators saw Murray serving for the match at 5-4 after breaking Djokovic’s serve but the latter broke back and the match went on to a tiebreak where the Serbian handily won 7-2.

Djokovic will face world number one and five-time Rome Masters champion Rafael Nadal in the final. This will be their fourth meeting this season with Djokovic winning their past three matches – all in ATP World Tour Masters 1000 Final (Indian Wells, Miami and Madrid).

Djokovic will still have the number two ranking next week after Nadal managed to make it past the semifinals in Rome.
