Roberta Vinci recaptures Barcelona Open title

Italy’s Roberta Vinci reclaimed the Barcelona Open title on Sunday after beating Lucie Hradecka in three tight sets 4-6, 6-2, 6-2. The Italian has performed consistently well in this claycourt tournament, winning the title in 2009 and finishing as runner-up last year (lost to French Open 2010 champ Francesca Schiavone).

The 6th-seeded player was in the verge of losing her semifinal match against Laura Pous-Tio but mustered enough strength and grit to prevail at the third set tie-breaker. Meanwhile, Hradecka had an amazing tournament, blasting her way against seeded players to reach her fourth WTA final. The 25-year old star from Czech Republic is still looking for her first WTA title.

“Lucie is very powerful. The key for me was to be aggressive and focused, and that’s why I won today. I was a little nervous before the match because it was a final, but I believed I played some good tennis today!” Vinci said.

Czech duo Barbora Zahlavova Strycova and Iveta Benesova won the doubles event.
