The Maria Sharapova vs Samantha Stosur Italian Open 2011 Final Match has been set on May 15, Sunday after both players beat higher ranked opponents in the semifinals. Australia’s Samantha Stosur, the tournament sixth seed, blasted past China’s Li Na (4th seed) in straight sets. Stosur had a stellar claycourt season last year highlighted with a runner-up finish at Roland Garros and she certainly made herself a favorite at the 2011 edition of the French Open which begins in May 22.
Maria Sharapova, the number seven seed, overcame a rusty start to beat reigning world number one Caroline Wozniacki in the other semifinal 7-5, 6-3. The 24-year old Russian is now 3-2 against Wozniacki.
On paper, Sharapova is the favorite to win the match against Stosur since the 3-time Grand Slam winner had won all their past seven meetings.
