The Internazionali BNP d’Italia Italian Open 2011 started on Saturday, May 7 with qualifying matches and will end on May 15, 2011. This pre-Roland Garros 2011 event is expected to attract the best singles and doubles players in the WTA Tour. World number one Caroline Wozniacki headlines the field which include top-caliber players such as Victoria Azarenka, 2010 finalist Jelena Jankovic, Maria Sharapova and many more.
Last year’s champion was Spain’s Maria José Martinez Sanchez who won her third and biggest WTA title by outlasting tournament favorite Jankovic in the final. Jankovic, a former world number one player, stormed to the finals by achieving a rare feat – defeating sisters Serena and Venus Williams in the same tournament.
The winner of the Internazionali BNL d’Italia Italian Open 2011 women’s singles event will win $360,000 while the winning doubles team will receive €$100,000.
