Tsvetana Pironkova of Bulgaria defeated five-time champion Venus Williams in the previous round. Pironkova holds the distinction together with Martina Hingis, Lindsay Davenport, Kim Clijsters and Serena Williams of having defeated Venus Williams three times or more at a Slam event. Last year, Pironkova ousted the 31-year old in the quarterfinals to reach her first career Slam semifinal. She could emulate the feat if she beats fellow 2010 Wimbledon semifinalist Petra Kvitova today. Kvitova routed Belgium’s Yanina Wickmayer in the fourth round.
