Wimbledon 2011 Championships Men’s Quarterfinal Preview

The world’s top four players are still in the running for this year’s Wimbledon Championships. Should they all win their quarterfinal matches today, they will set a record of having reached the final four in back-to-back Grand Slam events. The top four seeds also advanced at the recently concluded Roland Garros 2011.

Here are the men’s singles quarterfinalists and their respective matches at the Wimbledon 2011 Championships

[1] Rafael Nadal (ESP) vs [10] Mardy Fish (USA)
Nadal leads head-to-head series 5-0

Two-time Wimbledon champion Rafael Nadal is undoubtedly the heavy favorite to win the quarterfinal match against Mardy Fish of United States. The Spaniard is the defending champion and leads 5-0 in their head-to-head series.  However, their last match took place in September 2008 and avid tennis fans are aware that Mardy Fish has since improved in his game and recently became the number one tennis player in USA, overtaking good friend Andy Roddick in the world rankings.

[4] Andy Murray (GBR) vs [10] Feliciano Lopez (ESP)
Murray leads head-to-head series 4-0

Murray has reached the Wimbledon semifinals for the past two years and the pressure is here once more for the homegrown talent to make a step further and win the championship. The 24-year old Scot is attempting to become the first British player since Fred Perry in 1936 to win this grasscourt Slam. He’s been close to reach the finals for the past two years but fell short against Andy Roddick in 2009 and eventual champion Rafael Nadal last year. He’s heavily favored to win his upcoming match against Lopez since he holds a 4-0 head-to-head series against the Spaniard. However, the duo has never met on grasscourts which makes this encounter a must-see.

[3] Roger Federer (SUI) vs [12] Jo-Wilfried Tsonga (FRA)

Federerleads head-to-head series 4-1

Six-time Wimbledon champion Roger Federer holds a 4-1 lead against his French opponent. The Swiss star, currently ranked number three in the world, was beaten in the quarterfinal stage last year by eventual finalist Tomas Berdych. He’s not about to take Tsonga for granted since the Frenchman finished runner-up to Murray at the Queen’s Club this year giving him enough practice on the grasscourts. Federer skipped his usual grasscourt warmup event in Halle, Germany this year. This may cost him this upcoming match but he’s still the favorite to win.

[2] Novak Djokovic (SRB) vs [Q] Bernard Tomic (AUS)
First meeting

The quarterfinal match between Novak Djokovic and Bernard Tomic is arguably the most highly anticipated encounter at this stage of the 125th edition of the Wimbledon Championships. Djokovic, a two-time Wimbledon semifinalist, meets the Australian opponent for the first time. Tomic is getting a lot of media mileage this fortnight since he made it to the main draw via the qualifying rounds and reached the final eight in this prestigious grasscourt Slam. The Australian became the youngest man in 25 years to reach the quarterfinals at the All England Club.
