Wimbledon 2011: Ladies singles event gets much-needed starpower with Williams sisters return

For the first time in a year, the Williams sisters – Venus and Serena, will be competing together in a Grand Slam tournament and the best stage no less – at the Wimbledon Championships, where they both won a combined nine singles titles for the past eleven years.

Serena Williams was sidelined for more than a year due to foot injury and life-threatening blood clot. She competed at the Eastbourne tournament but was ousted at the second round. However, she’s still being considered as a heavy favorite to win the Wimbledon 2011 tournament as she is the defending champion.

As for Venus Williams, the five-time Wimbledon champion is always never counted out when it comes to this grasscourt Slam. The 31-year old is always a force to reckon with.

The WTA players express their welcome to the sisters for the much-anticipated return to tennis. However, it could not be helped, as some of the players said, that their return means a more difficult road ahead at the Wimbledon championships where each player aspires to become a champion.
