2011 French Open, Wimbledon champions bow out to Romanians at US Open first round

In a surprising twist at the 2011 US Open tournament, all the three 2011 Grand Slam Women’s Singles champions did not make it past the first round. Defending champion Kim Clijsters, the 2011 Australian Open champion, has already announced a few weeks ago that she won’t be competing at the tournament a few weeks ago.

For French Open 2011 champion Li Na, she succumbed to Romanian Simona Halep 2-6, 5-7 in the second day of competitions at the Louis Armstrong Stadium. The day earlier, Wimbledon 2011 champion Petra Kvitova was beaten by Alexandra Dulgheru, also from Romania.

Both Li and Kvitova were pegged as favorites for this hardcourt tournament but with their early exits, the tournament has just become unpredictable – especially in the women’s singles event.
