Chanelle Scheepers wins first WTA title in Guangzhou

South Africa’s Chanelle Scheepers won her first career WTA title in Guangzhou, China  after outlasting Magdalena Rybarikova 6-2, 6-2 on Saturday, September 24 at the WANLIMA Guangzhou International Women’s Open.

The seventh-seeded player won all her earlier rounds in three sets each but that only served to her advantage in the final when it only took her less than an hour and a half to beat her eighth-seeded opponent.

“All of my other matches were tough, but today was the day it all clicked,” Scheepers said.
“I thought I was hitting my groundstrokes well. I was really consistent and tried to move her around. I didn’t give her a lot of mistakes,” she added.

The doubles event was won by Taiwanese Hsieh Su-Wei and China’s Zheng Saisai.
