Petra Kvitova wins 2011 WTA Championships title

Czech Republic’s Petra Kvitova finished her amazing season with a bang on Sunday, winning the year-end TEB BNP Paribas WTA Championships title on Sunday and securing the world no. 2 ranking for the first time. Kvitova beat Victoria Azarenka of Belarus in three sets 7-5, 4-6, 6-3.

“It was unbelievable tennis,” Kvitova said.

“We were both really fighting. Every game and every set was very close. Maybe I played better on the important points in the match. We both played some of our best here in Istanbul today – it was a final, so why not!” she added.

The final was a battle for the year-end world no. 2 ranking as well and with the win Kvitova has equalled the total title hauls of top-ranked Caroline Wozniacki this season with six. This will make the 2012 season more interesting for Kvitova as she’s expected to aim for the top-ranking by then.

Kvitova won $1.75 million for winning the title.
