2011 Swiss Indoors: Roger Federer wins fifth Basel title

Roger Federer won his fifth Swiss Indoors Basel title on Sunday after beating Japan’s Kei Nishikori 6-1, 6-3. This is their first meeting in the ATP tour.

“I’m very happy, as I got better as the week went on,” said Federer.

“I definitely saved the best for last at the tournament. I played really well today in the final,” he added.

The Basel win is Federer’s 68th career title and second of the 2011 season. His last title win was earlier this season at a tournament in Doha.

As for Nishikori, the defeat was a disappointment but at the same time an exciting opportunity.

“I think I started a little bit nervous even though at the same time I was excited to play in the final here with Roger,” Nishikori said.

“I’m a bit disappointed with how I played today, as it didn’t go well, but it’s always going to be tough against him… His tennis was too good for me. I felt like I couldn’t do anything,” he added.

Both players will now compete for the BNP Paribas Masters or 2011 Paris Masters this week, the final regular ATP tournament of the season.
