Andy Murray survives challenge from big-serving Croatian at Wimbledon

Britain’s top-ranked player Andy Murray faced a challenging opponent in the secound round of the 2012 Wimbledon Championships on Thursday. The fourth-ranked player in the world eventually prevailed against big-serving Ivo Karlovic 7-5, 6-7(5), 6-2, 7-6(4) in about three hours. The match was watched by 2001 champion Goran Ivanisevic.

This is Murray’s 28th victory this season and the three-time Wimbledon semifinalist is aiming to improve on his best finish at his homecourt Slam event. Now that the player who eliminated him in the semifinals for two years in a row (Rafael Nadal) is gone, this could be Murray’s best chance to reach the final for the first time – or even win the title.

“Any match you just want to try to find a way to win,” said Murray.

“It’s not always about how you play. [I] got off to a bad start of 0/40 down, and then I broke straightaway, straight back. Then after losing that tight second set, to get that break at the beginning of the third set was important as well. So I did a good job,” he added.

Murray will next face Marcos Baghdatis of Cyprus on Saturday.
