World number two Victoria Azarenka managed to hold off a spirited challenge from American Irina Falconi in the second set to win her opening round match at the 2012 Wimbledon Championships on Tuesday with a score of 6-1, 6-4.
The Australian Open 2012 Champion looked all set to win the match in a straightforward fashion but was broken twice in the second set to give Falconi a chance to make a comeback. However, the Belarussian managed to convert her second match point and sealed the victory.
Azarenka is a semifinalist at the All England Club last year where she lost to eventual champion Petra Kvitova.
