WTA Tour Rankings July 9, 2012: Serena Williams now at number 4, Azarenka regains top ranking

The WTA Tour rankings released on Monday, July 9 showed an imminent return to the top ranking by 14-time Grand Slam Champion Serena Williams. Williams won her 14th Grand Slam singles title on Sunday at the 2012 Wimbledon Championships, beating Agnieszka Radwanska of Poland. With the title win, Williams is now ranked fourth in the world and could potentially smash all her way to the top due to her renewed confidence on her game. Last year’s runner up Maria Sharapova lost the top ranking despite winning the Roland Garros tournament due to her early exit at the All England Club. Victoria Azarenka regains the top ranking while Radwanska achieves a career-high number two. The Polish player would have clinched the top ranking had she won the Wimbledon title.
