World number one Roger Federer said that he’s hopeful to finish the 2012 season atop of the world rankings and taking part in this week’s Shanghai Rolex Masters is a great step for him to achieve this goal. The Swiss star skipped this event last year.
“I hope I will finish World No. 1 at the end of the year,” Federer said.
“I’ve already reached my goal by getting back to World No. 1 in the summer. That was for me the goal, getting back there and winning a Grand Slam, particularly Wimbledon, plus the Olympic gold medal is a big thing for me as well,” he added.
When asked about how he feels about his performance so far, Federer said:
“I feel very much at peace and I’m happy. I always have to look 12 months ahead, as well, making sure I stay injury free, that I stay hungry for more. This is where if it works out, great, and if it doesn’t, someone else plays better. I am here, so I’ll give it the best shot I can and we’ll see how it goes.”
At the ATP Rankings Race to London, Novak Djokovic has a lead of 1,290 points over Federer, though the 52-week ranking tally shows the Swiss star still in number one.
The ATP World Tour Finals takes place from November 5 to 12 at London’s The O2.
