Serena Williams ousted by Sloane Stephens at Australian Open 2013 Quarterfinals

It’s an unexpected conclusion for the match but you’d better believe it. Nineteen-year old Sloane Stephens of the United States ousted overwhelming favorite Serena Williams 3-6, 7-5, 6-4 at the Australian Open 2013 quarterfinals in a match full of drama. Williams suffered a back injury during the second set which may have affected her gameplay. Despite a spirited fight in the third set, it was Stephens who held herself and broke Williams’ serve to win 6-4 in the third set.

Up next for Stephens is world number one and defending champion Victoria Azarenka. As for Williams, the number one ranking may have to wait.
