Now Querrey must Continue up the Ladder

Sam Querrey will soon feel the heat of being the men’s US number one in tennis after the ATP revealed the American will climb above compatriot, John Isner, in the rankings come Monday.

Querrey has been relatively consistent this spring and gets his reward for a good start to his season by leapfrogging Isner, who crashed out in the first round of Indian Wells.

So harmful was Isner’s loss to his world ranking points, that regardless of how Querrey did at the BNP Paribas Open this March he was guaranteed to surpass his Davis Cup team-mate on the ATP ladder.

The news comes at a good time for tennis betting fans on Betfair.com, who have grown increasingly frustrated over the years with a lack of US players competing for major championships.

Only Andy Roddick has really made any sort of impact on the ATP tour since Pete Sampras retired in 2002 and although Querrey will probably never make that level he still is a real prospect for the future.

“It means a lot. It’s a great feeling,” Querrey told tennis news reporters. “I feel like I have worked hard to earn it. Everyone seems like they’ve got their shot … I feel like it’s my turn now.”

Indeed, at 25 Querrey is reaching his physical maturity and these next three seasons should be the best of his career.

Whether or not the soon-to-be world number 20 can ever break into the top five is yet to be seen, but betting fans are already tipping him to turn heads at Roland Garros and Wimbledon this summer.

With the French Open a few months away, all Querrey needs is a good run of results in clay tournaments and he could easily make the quarter finals in Paris.

Granted, maybe winning his first Grand Slam is still a few years away but Querrey is doing all the right things and should continue to impress on the ATP tour this season.
