Roger Federer drops out of world’s top four for first time in a decade

Swiss tennis superstar Roger Federer has fallen to number five in the world rankings following the updated list posted at the ATP World Tour site on Monday. This is the first time in a decade that Federer has fallen out of the world’s top four.

The significant drop in the rankings was due to Federer’s shock second round defeat at the recently concluded Wimbledon 2013 Championships. He entered the tournament as the defending champion and the early loss triggered a significant deduction on his ranking points.

The last time he was ranked number five in the world was in June 23, 2003 which was prior to his run to his first Wimbledon title back then.

Meanwhile, Novak Djokovic remains as world number one following his runner-up finish at Wimbledon. He added ranking points since he was a semifinalist last year. Andy Murray, the Wimbledon 2013 champion, stays as number two. David Ferrer achieves a career high number three with his quarterfinal finish at the All England Club while Rafael Nadal, touted to gain significant points at Wimbledon, crashed out in the first round and stayed at number four.
