Serena Williams leads field at Collector Swedish Open in Bastad

World number one Serena Williams is aiming to win her first career International-level WTA event this week at the Collector Swedish Open 2013 in Bastad, Sweden. The American tennis superstar has only participated in a few International-level events but surprisingly has not won a title. Her 52 singles titles have been come from Grand Slams, Premiers and higher-tier events.

Williams will be wary of her upcoming opponents since the field is composed of Romanian Simona Halep, Klara Zakopalova of the Czech Republic and Tsvetana Pironkova of Bulgaria who have been experiencing career surges the past few months.

The top-ranked player’s first opponent will be Sesil Karatantcheva of Kazakhstan.

“I’ve never been to Bastad and I’m excited about it,” Williams was quoted as saying during Wimbledon. “I’ve heard it’s a great city. I’ve heard that it’s like Cannes, but in Sweden. I definitely need to experience that.

“I’m looking forward to getting back on the clay, then I’m going to hit the hardcourts in the US.”
