Serena Williams named Best Female Athlete at ESPY Awards 2013

World number one Serena Williams was presented once more the prestigious Best Female Athlete Award at the ESPY Awards, an accolade that’s presented by sports network ESPN. This was announced on Wednesday, July 17. This is the 21st edition of the ESPY Award.

Williams’ results since July of 2012 have been phenomenal wherein she went on a 67-4 win-loss record. Williams collected three Grand Slam titles – including Wimbledon 2012, US Open 2012 and French Open 2013. She also collected titles in other prestigious WTA events such as the WTA Championships, Brisbane International, Miami Open, Charleston, Madrid Open and Rome Open. She also won the singles gold medal at the London Olympics held at Wimbledon.

This is Williams’ second Best Female Athlete Award from ESPY, having won this accolade in 2003. Other female tennis stars who achieved this feat including Monica Seles (1993) and Venus Williams (2002).

Aside from the above-mentioned award, Williams was also presented the Best Female Tennis Player, her sixth time to get this award (2003, 2004, 2009, 2010, 2011 and this year). This is the most among WTA stars. Sharapova won this award four times (2005, 2007, 2008 and 2012). Steffi Graf (1994, 1996, 1997) and Venus Williams (2001, 2002, 2006) have won the title thrice each.
