Roger Federer to be seeded 7th at US Open 2013

For the first time in over a decade, Roger Federer will be seeded outside of the top three in a Grand Slam event.

Due to his current ranking of world number seven, Federer will get the number seeding at the US Open 2013 Championships which begin on August 26 in New York.

Federer’s ranking dropped from number five to seven this week following his quarterfinal exit at the Cincinnati Masters where he was the defending champion. His rivals Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal and Andy Murray will occupy the top three seedings at the US Open and he could face either of them in the quarterfinals.

Federer has won a total of 17 Grand Slam titles in his career including five at the US Open.

The last time Federer was seeded outside of the top three was at the Wimbledon Championships in 2003. He was seeded fourth in the event where he went on to win his first career Grand Slam title.
