U.S. Postal Service to honor tennis legend Althea Gibson with commemorative stamp

The United States Postal Office will be releasing a commemorative stamp featuring tennis legend Althea Gibson as part of its Black Heritage Series.

According to reports, the stamp will be made available in the United States on Friday, August 23.

Gibson become the first black competitor and winner of the US Open and Wimbledon in the fifties. She passed away at the age of 76 in 2003. She won the aforementioned Grand Slam events in 1957 and 1958.

The tennis legend became the first female athlete to be featured in the US Postal Office’s Black Heritage Series.
