Carla Suarez Navarro earns US Open 2013 quarterfinal berth, beats eighth-seed Kerber

Eighteenth-seed Carla Suarez Navarro of Spain upset eighth-seed Angelique Kerber 4-6, 6-3, 7-6 in the fourth round of the US Open 2013, to earn the first quarterfinal berth. Up next for Suarez Navarro is world number one Serena Williams, who outlasted fellow countrywoman Sloane Stephens 6-4, 6-1.

Kerber, a former US Open semifinalist, won the first set and seemed headed for a straight sets victory before Suarez Navarro found her groove and levelled things up. In the third set, the match became closer than ever with a tiebreaker being contested and Suarez Navarro prevailing in the end.

“In the last set I was so nervous when I was serving for the match but I managed to come back and be loose in the tie-break and just play my game,” Suárez Navarro said.

The Spaniard is looking forward to her quarterfinal match against the world’s number one.

“It’s amazing to be in the quarterfinals and to be playing against Serena. She’s a very good player, she’s No.1, she’s won a lot of Grand Slams so it’s going to be difficult! I just need to be relaxed, concentrate on my game and just try to enjoy the match.”
