David Ferrer named US Open 2013 Sportsmanship Awardee

World number four David Ferrer of Spain became the recipient of the 2013 US Open Sportsmanship Award. The Spaniard was bestowed with a trophy by USTA Sportsmanship Selection Committee Chairman Todd Martin prior to his post-match press conference. The award was given after he lost his quarterfinal match on Wednesday night against Richard Gasquet of France.

Part of his award is a $5,000 donation that will be given to Ferrer’s choice of charity institution.

“As relentless a competitor as David is on the court, he is just as respectful toward the game and his opponents,” said USTA Chairman, CEO and President Dave Haggerty. “David personifies what the US Open Sportsmanship Award represents and certainly deserves the recognition.”

The US Open Sportsmanship Award debuted in 2012. The first recipients were Americans Bob Bryan and Mike Bryan, the top-ranked men’s doubles team in the world.
