Novak Djokovic aims to find better form for US Open 2013 final on Monday

World number one Novak Djokovic will aim to find a better form for the upcoming US Open 2013 Men’s Singles Final on Monday. He will be facing world number two Rafael Nadal for the title. The Serbian had to tough out a five-set 2-6, 7-6(4), 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 semifinal victory over Stanislas Wawrinka of Switzerland in Saturday’s match.

“I managed to find my way through, to adjust and to win. That’s what counts,” Djokovic said. “I’m really happy that I won in five sets again coming back from two sets to one down. Mentally it’s going to help me, and physically I’m fine. I haven’t been spending much time on court before this match today. I’m going to have two days now to get ready for finals.”

By reaching the US Open final, Djokovic is assured of retaining the top ranking once the rankings are released this week. He’s ready to fight hard against the Spaniard world number two who remains unbeaten in hardcourt matches this season.

“With no doubt he’s the best player in the moment this year, no question about it. The way he’s been playing he’s very confident, but I know how to play him. Hard court is the surface that, as I said, is my most successful surface. I have played him already here twice in the finals. I know what I need to do.”

Despite holding the number one ranking for now, Djokovic trails Nadal in terms of ranking points earned solely for the 2013 season. Nadal has no points to defend until the end of the season and is poised to earn more ranking points that could catapult him to end the season as world number one.

“It’s important to me, of course. I have been finishing the year’s No. 1 the last two seasons and I know how much consistency and hard work and energy is put into all this. For 10, 11 months of a season you need to deliver in order to be No. 1 of the world…I’m fighting for it. I need to play well and I need to win tournaments in order to finish No. 1. I’m aware of that.”
