Novak Djokovic surges into US Open 2013 fourth round, ends Sousa’s run

World number one Novak Djokovic continued his impressive run at the US Open 2013 Championships after he dispatched Portuguese player Joao Sousa 6-0, 6-2, 6-2 on Sunday. This is Djokovic’s 18th consecutive fourth round appearance at a Grand Slam event and he will face Marcel Granollers of Spain for a spot inthe quarterfinals.

The Serbian has a lot of great things to say of playing on a night session at the Arthur Ashe Stadium.

“It’s the biggest stadium we have in the sport, 23,000 seats. I don’t even see the top. But I can hear you very well,” he said during the on-court interview. “New York offers a unique vibe, especially in the night.”

Djokovic is aiming to maintain his hold on the top ranking and this can be made possible with a victory in New York. He’s a defending finalist at the US Open and if world number two Rafael Nadal goes as far as winning the title in New York, Djokovic will find his ranking go down to number two.

Djokovic is the favorite to win against Granollers, having won their lone encounter at the Australian Open 2011 first round.

Granollers earned a spot in the fourth round after eliminating the last American male player standing at this tournament Tim Smyczek 6-4, 4-6, 0-6, 6-3, 7-5.
