Tommy Robredo stuns Roger Federer to reach US Open 2013 quarterfinals

Tommy Robredo of Spain posted a surprise win over Roger Federer of Switzerland at the US Open 2013 Championships fourth round match on Monday at the Louis Armstrong Stadium. This is Robredo’s first win over the Swiss star in their 11 meetings on tour. It was a straight sets win for the Spaniard 7-6(3), 6-3, 6-4 and earned him a spot in the quarterfinals.

“I beat the best guy of all time… in a place that he loves to play, I’m delighted,” 31-year old Robredo said after the match. “I made the break points, he did not.”

Federer had several chances to break Robredo’s serves in many occasions but only converted just two of 16 break point chances.

“I missed so many opportunities, rhythm was off,” Federer said. “I struggled throughout, which is not very satisfying… I kind of feel like I beat myself, without taking any credit away from Tommy. Clearly he was making sure he was making many balls. It was up to me to make the difference and I couldn’t.”

This is the first time since 2002 that Federer has not reached a Grand Slam final in a single season. He played for the first time at the Louis Armstrong Stadium since 2006. Their match was originally scheduled at the Arthur Ashe Stadium but had to be moved due to rain delay.

Robredo will next face compatriot Rafael Nadal in the quarterfinals. Nadal defeated Philipp Kohlschreiber of Germany in four sets.
