Rafael Nadal pulls out of Swiss Indoors Basel, hands Juan Martin Del Potro the top seeding

World number one Rafael Nadal has announced that he won’t be participating at the Swiss Indoors 2013 Basel tournament which begins on Monday, October 21, citing fatigue as the main reason for doing so.

“Hi all, sorry to announce that I won’t travel to Basel in Switzerland but after very exhausting weeks I have to regroup my fitness and my body,” he wrote on his official Facebook page.

“I will do my best to come back to the Swiss Indoors next year,” he added.

The Spaniard has had a magnificent season, winning a total of ten titles including two Grand Slam titles at the Roland Garros and US Open. Despite having missed the Australian Open and losing in the opening round at Wimbledon Championships, Nadal accumulated enough ranking points to unseat rival Novak Djokovic in the rankings race.

Nadal’s next tournament will be the Paris Masters which takes place a week after the Basel tournament. He’s also going to be the top seed of the year-end ATP World Tour Finals in London in November.

Nadal’s withdrawal from this ATP 500 Indoor hardcourt tournament means that defending champion and world number five Juan Martin Del Potro of Argentina will become the top seed while five-time champion Roger Federer will be elevated to number three seed.
