Serena Williams breaks $10 million prize money mark, sets earnings record

World number one Serena Williams became the only female tennis player to break the $10 million prize money mark in a single season after the American defeated Angelique Kerber in their round robin match at the WTA Championships in Istanbul on Tuesday. Williams is now 74-4 for the season after a commanding 6-3, 6-1 victory over the German.

The win means that Williams is assured to accumulate more than $10 million in prize money for this season alone and her haul can rise up to $12 million if she successfully defends the WTA Championships title.

The previous mark was set by Victoria Azarenka in 2012 when she accumulated almost $8 million in earnings.
