Tsonga advances to Shanghai Masters 2013 semifinals, closes in on Federer for ATP World Tour Finals

Frenchman Jo-Wilfried Tsonga advanced to the semifinals of the Shanghai Masters 2013 which moved him to within just 135 points of eighth-placer Roger Federer in the ATP Race to London Standings. Tsonga defeated Florian Mayer of Germany 6-2, 6-3 in the quarterfinal match that lasted 65 minutes. The French player has missed several tournaments this year due to left knee injury and just returned to action just a month ago.

“I played well,” Tsonga said. “I had some trouble to finish the match.”

The 28-year old maintained his perfect head to head series record against Mayer with 4-0. By reaching the final four of this ATP Masters 1000 event, Tsonga will accumulate 3,010 points. Roger Federer, who lost in the third round, has 3,145 points. There are still five spots for grabs for the ATP World Tour Finals 2013 which begins in November at London’s O2.

Up next for Tsonga is either defending champion Novak Djokovic or Gael Monfils.
