Andy Murray almost hired Australian coach Rasheed before choosing Lendl

Wimbledon 2013 champion Andy Murray revealed in his new book titled “77” that he almost hired Australian coach Roger Rasheed before choosing to go with Czech coach and multiple Grand Slam titlist Ivan Lendl.

Murray detailed that he wanted to go with Darren Cahill as coach but the latter is already working with Adidas. The Scot also talked with Bob Brett who coached Goran Ivanisevic, Boris Becker and Marin Cilic.

“With Darren (Cahill) as the conduit, the choice came down to two people: Roger Rasheed and Ivan Lendl. Roger had worked on the tour for a long time. We always got on well together. I knew he would work me hard, that he had a great appreciation for the game. I thought it could be a good fit because I really, really like and respect him.”

When asked to comment on this, Rasheed told The Australian:

“We have a lot of respect for each other and have known each other a long time. We’ve had a lot of tennis discussions – we still do. We’ll always be quite close and friendly as we enjoy each other’s tennis minds. Andy is the type of player I obviously look to coach. He’s like Lleyton and Jo and Gael because they’re at that top end and you can really push them and extend them. They have no limitations to what you want to do with them and their talent.”
