Samantha Stosur poised to win Newcombe Medal for fourth straight year

Samantha Stosur is facing tough competition for the Newcombe Medal award, a prestigious award that she’s won for the past three year.

Newcombe Medal is an award given to the most outstanding Australian tennis player of the season. Stosur, the 2011 US Open champion, has had struggles earlier during the 2013 season but capped a strong second half which saw her winning the title in Osaka, Japan and reaching the finals at the Kremlin Cup in Moscow and the WTA Tournament of Champions in Sofia, Bulgaria.

“I’d looked at the year as a whole and thought it hadn’t been great, my ranking’s dropped, didn’t perform that great in the Grand Slams, especially the ones where I felt like I could’ve had a better showing. But it was my best Wimbledon, the most comfortable I’ve ever felt playing there … I beat (Victoria) Azarenka and (Petra) Kvitova for the first time this year, and certain things I felt were going along quite well and then I guess at the end of the year that boosted everything by winning another title and making some more finals,” Stosur said to tennis.com.au.

Other contenders for the Newcombe Medal are Bernard Tomic, Lleyton Hewitt, Ashley Barty, Nick Kyrgios and Casey Dellacqua.
