Serena Williams was named as the Associated Press Female Athlete of the Year for the third time in her career. This was not a surprising development considering that the American tennis superstar has accumulated 11 titles in 2013 which included 2 Grand Slam titles (Roland Garros and US Open). She also won 78 matches and enjoyed a career-high 34-match winning streak which ran between Miami Open and Wimbledon.
She earned $12,385,572 in prize money in 2013 alone which is a record high. She also ended the season as world number 1, the third time she achieved the feat.
