Chennai Open Final to feature Wawrinka vs Roger-Vasselin

Former champion Stanislas Wawrinka of Switzerland is aiming to win his second Chennai Open title on Sunday where he will face Edouard Roger-Vasselin in the final. Their head to head series record are tied at 1-1. Wawrinka won their first meeting back in 2011 at the same tournament while Roger-Vasselin avenged the defeat in last year’s Swiss Indoors Basel.

Wawrinka led Vasek Pospisil of Canada 6-4, 5-5 on Saturday’s semifinal when the latter retired from the match.

Roger-Vasselin survived a tough test from sixth-seed Marcel Granollers of Spain 6-2, 4-6, 6-3. He’s aiming for his first career ATP Tour title.

“Hopefully, I can win one more match,” said Roger-Vasselin. “It is a great start to 2014. I hit a lot of winners in the first set, but he played better in the second. I didn’t lose my concentration. I stayed calm and I was able to change the match in my favour, from a 0-2 deficit, in the decider.”
