Rafael Nadal admits getting emotional when Roger Federer won French Open

World number one Rafael Nadal admitted in a recent interview that he cried when Swiss Maestro Roger Federer won the French Open title back in 2009.

“I got emotional. He deserved to win that tournament, after so many finals and semi-finals. He deserved to win all four Grand Slams,” said Nadal in an interview published in French daily ‘L’Equipe’.

Federer still has an impressive record at the Roland Garros tournament. He’s reached the semifinal once and reached the final thrice where he lost those times to Nadal. In 2009, Nadal suffered his lone loss in Paris to Robin Soderling in the fourth round. Soderling would go on to meet Federer in the final that year and the Swiss Maestro would hoist his lone Roland Garros title to complete a career Grand Slam.

Nadal did clarify that he gets emotional in other significant sporting events.

“I also cried when Spain won the World Cup in South Africa,” he revealed.
