Garbine Muguruza qualifies for WTA Finals Singapore

Spain’s Garbine Muguruza will make her debut in the singles field of the WTA Finals Singapore this October. Muguruza, a finalist at this year’s Wimbledon, joins Simona Halep and Maria sharapova in the 2015 field so far. World number one Serena Williams, who qualified earlier this year and the defending champion, opted to end her season after the US Open and won’t be participating in Singapore.

Muguruza was in Singapore a year ago where she qualified in the doubles category with compatriot Carla Suarez Navarro.

“I’m very excited to have qualified for the WTA Finals in Singapore,” said Garbiñe Muguruza. “This has been an exciting year for me. I have worked very hard this last month and I am really happy how it had paid off. Qualifying to Singapore is a great reward. I have great memories from Singapore last year playing doubles and this time I am looking forward to compete against the best singles players in the world”.

Muguruza enjoyed a resurgence in China the past two weeks. She reached the final of the Premier-level Wuhan Open where she retired in the second set versus eventual winner Venus Williams. She would follow up her run with a title victory at the Premier Mandatory China Open in Beijing.
